Active heave compensated winches are designed for rough operation in an offshore environment.

Precision Handling with Advanced Active Heave Compensation Technology

The AHC system is specially designed for load handling from a vessel or rig towards the seabed, underwater installations or other fixed targets on the seabed. To control the relative position of a load to a fixed object, active heave compensation (AHC) is used. The position is determined by the control system using the real-time signal of a motion reference unit (MRU) as an input signal. In response to this signal, the AHC system will pay in or pay out to keep the load at a constant elevation.

AHC winches operate in:

  • Normal mode
  • Constant tension
  • Active heave compensation

Optimized Hydraulic Power and Exceptional AHC Performance

Power consumption: the drive system uses the latest available hydraulic technology and smart system design to share the available power as effective as possible between the different functions. This means that installed power will be very low compared to the AHC performance and available hoisting speeds.

AHC performance: the AHC performance of the PALFINGER winches is a really strong benefit. It is as considered as one of the best systems in the market with the capacity to reduce the movements with 98 %. The drive train has been optimized for the correct speed range and the acceleration capacity is extremely high. The algorithms for AHC is newly developed by experienced engineers to perform in the best possible way together with the secondary controlled system.

Winch Control Benefits

The hydraulic system provides exceptional stability and control during subsea operations. There is no load drop when the brake is released, and unlike conventional closed-loop systems, no re-tuning is needed to prevent hook movement. The load remains fully stable at all times.

The system also allows the operator to hold a load with the brakes off, without any gradual lowering due to hydraulic leakage. Even in subsea mode, the load can be safely held for several days with the brake off and all safety systems active, ensuring precise and secure subsea installations.

Active Heave Compensation on Hydraulic Driven Winches

AHC winches are based on an secondary controlled hydraulic active heave compensation system. A secondary controlled hydraulic winch enables compensation of the heave motion of the vessel with an extremely fast response time at low power consumptions.

In response to the signal of a motion reference unit, the winch will pay in/out wire rope. With a secondary controlled hydraulic system, both active heave compensation and constant tensioning are available on the winch.

Our hydraulic driven AHC winches are available up to 400 tons SWL.

Active Heave Compensation on Electric Driven Winches

PALFINGER delivers electric driven winches with active heave compensation. High power, low inertia E-motors allow real-time compensation of the heave motion of the load.

In response to the signal of a motion reference unit, the winch will pay in/out wire rope. With an electric system both active heave compensation and constant tensioning are available on the winch.

Electrical driven AHC winches are available up to 20 tons SWL.
